Solomon Millikan
1784-1860
Solomon Millikan
Solomon Millikan was born February 28, 1784 in Guilford North Carolina to William Jr. and Eleanor (Smith) Millikan. Solomon's family moved to Morriston, Tennessee when he was 8 years old.
On June 5, 1804 he married Nancy Morgan in Grainger, Tennessee, the daughter of Henry and Nellie Gertrude (Cole) Morgan. They were married by the Justice of the Peace Samuel Yancey. The Bondsman for the marriage was Charles Smith. This union produced 14 children. Many researchers list an Abraham Millikan b. 1823 in Grainger County, TN and d. 1900 in Crittenden, KY who married Sarah Owens, then Josephine Bell as a child for this couple. I have not been able to confirm or deny Abraham Millikan as of yet.

In November 1847, the family moved from Grainger County, Tennessee to Marion, Kentucky. Solomon was a skillful gunsmith and early in life had a shop in Allen's Station, Tennessee, where he made rifles and holster guns. After his settlement in Kentucky he repaired and stocked guns and rifles. It is stated that his long rifles with hand forged barrels, cherry wood stocks and cunningly engraved brass mountings were considered to be fine shooters and Solomon was quite celebrated.
The couple were married for 56 years until Solomon passed away October 26, 1860 at the age of 76 in Crittenden, Kentucky. Nancy passed away 5 years later in 1865 at the age of 82.
In 1999, Solomon's original headstone was still located in the middle of a field under a tree on the old homeplace, a short distance from the cemetery. A commemorative gravestone has been placed by their descendants in the Brown Wring Cemetery, sometimes called the Childress and Millikan Cemetery located off View Road, down a logging road.
