John A. Sherfield
1833-1903
John A. Sherfield
John A. Sherfield was born in January 1833. The United States Census indicate Kentucky as his place of birth. Many researchers place his birth in Todd County, Kentucky. John's parentage is unproven at this time.
John married Jane Sexton on September 25, 1855 in Stewart County, Tennessee. The union between John and his first wife produced 2 children, both living into adulthood. After at least 20 years into the marriage, Jane passed away as indicated on the 1880 Pulaski County, Illinois Census. It shows a 47 year old John who is widowed with his two young children (Charley and Augusta) living in the Waters home (No known relation to Waters family).
Research tends to prove that children were born in the first or second year of marriage during this era. It can be assumed that John and Jane had other children that were more than likely already out of the home in 1880 when John was left a widow.

On August 5, 1884 John married Charlotte P. "Lottie" Riley, the daughter of Thomas and Melinda Rhoda (Miller) Riley. The couple were married at Lottie's maternal uncle, Pleasant Miller's home, in Crittenden, Kentucky. This union produced three children, all living into adulthood. The family remained in Crittenden County, Kentucky until Lottie passed away around 1896, leaving John widowed again.

After the death of his second wife Lottie, John moved the family to Hayti, Missouri to be closer to Sherfield relatives. It is unclear as to when he returned to Crittenden, Kentucky where he came to marry Emma Jane "EJ" Millikan. John and Emma were joined in marriage on July 2, 1901. John was 68 years old and Emma was just 21 years old. This was John's 3rd marriage and Emma's 1st. The marriage produced one child living into adulthood. Shortly after the birth of his son, John A. Sherfield passed away in 1903 and it is unclear of where John's burial is located. His 3rd wife Emma re-married and their son, John Elzy Sherfield took on his new step-father's last name Morse when he was 4 years old.
